World Ocean Assessment Review Period Open

The first World Ocean Assessment (WOA) is now available for review. This comprehensive overview of the oceanic environment comprises nearly 50 topics grouped within four main themes—biophysical aspects of the marine environment, food security and safety, human activities that influence the ocean, and marine biological diversity and habitats—and includes a technical summary showing interdisciplinary linkages between human impacts, ecosystem services, species, and habitats.

All members of the international community interested in the report contents are encouraged to participate in the review process and submit comments. The chapters are available for public comment between 20 December 2014 and 6 February 2015, after which further feedback will not be accepted.

WGMS Publish Latest Glacier Mass Budget Results

The World Glacier Monitoring Service (WGMS; WDS Regular Member) have published the latest glacier mass budget results on its website. These results were compiled from the 2014 call-for-data, which covered the observation period of the hydrological year 2012/13. In addition, WGMS has introduced near-time reporting from its 'reference' glaciers (those having more than 30 years of continued observations) to provide a preliminary estimate for the glacier budgets for 2014.

2015 International Data Rescue Award

Integrated Earth Data Applications (IEDA; WDS Regular Member) and Elsevier (WDS Associate Member) have announced a call for submissions for the 2015 International Data Rescue Award in the Geosciences. This Award was created to improve prospects for preservation and access of research data, particularly dark data, and share the varied ways that these data are being processed, stored, and used.

The contest invites members of the international geosciences and related communities to submit written descriptions of projects that are based on, or substantially involve, the recovery and reuse of scientific data that were not initially accessible for research. Submissions are specifically encouraged from groups or individuals who have developed and completed projects that:
 – Digitized content formerly available only in an analogue or obsolete electronic format, possibly including the addition of rich metadata to make the content more easily accessible and re-usable.
 – Developed data standards, tools, and processes that facilitate and improve the ingestion of research data into sustainable, open access databases.

The deadline for entries is 31 January 2015, and to find out more information and to submit your entry, please visit the following pages or contact the organizers  (Elsevier) and  (IEDA):
