19th Meeting of the WDS Scientific Committee
The 19th Meeting of the WDS Scientific Committee (WDS-SC) took place on 12–13 November in Cape Town, South Africa. This was the second of the SC's biannual meetings in 2018, and was hosted by the offices of the South African Environmental Observation Network.
In addition to reports on the achievements of the WDS International Programme Office, the new WDS International Technology Office, WDS Working Groups, and various WDS events (including International Data Week 2018, and Data Repositories Day); the Meeting agenda mainly focussed on the strategy, visibility, and positioning of the World Data System in light of the creation of the International Science Council (ISC) in July 2018. The WDS Strategic and Implementation Plans were accordingly updated to maximize the WDS contribution to potential ISC foci, as well as to ensure the effectiveness of WDS liaisons with the ISC Scientific Unions and National members and of its broader communication strategies. There were also two brainstorming sessions on certification, and on mentoring and training, both of which looked at the issues of nascent/less mature repositories and data at risk.
