Data Challenges for Global Sustainability
The ICSU World Data System (ICSU-WDS) organized a parallel session, in collaboration with the Committee on Data for Science and Technology (CODATA), on Data Challenges for Global Sustainability at the Planet under Pressure 2012 Conference in London, UK. The session was co-chaired by Dr. Roberta Balstad and Dr. Michael Diepenbroek (WDS-SC).
Mitigating and coping with the impacts of global change require shared access to high-quality, relevant, and readily understandable data and information about the Earth system. This session explored experiences in developing multi-disciplinary observation and data systems, integrated indicators for decision making, and open frameworks for data and information sharing, and highlighted the key contributions of funders and publishers.
Speakers included Dr. Robert Chen (CODATA; Center for International Earth Science Information Network, The Earth Institute, Columbia University, USA), Prof. Huadong Guo (CODATA; Center for Earth Observation and Digital Earth, Chinese Academy of Sciences, China), Prof. Bernard Minster (WDS; Scripps Institution of Oceanography, University of California, San Diego, USA), Mr. Mark Thorley (Natural Environment Research Council, UK), Ms. Ruth Wilson (Nature Publishing Group, UK), and Ms. Angelika Wirtz (Integrated Research on Disaster Risks, China and Munich Re, Germany).
