Second Scientific Committee Meeting

The governing body of the ICSU World Data System met for the second time in Paris, 22-24 March 2010. The Scientific Committee worked on finalizing the criteria for membership and approved the draft constitution of the system. It also made significant progress on the certification process and approved a logo and started to consolidate the ICSU WDS website: (http://www.icsu-wds.org). The Committee also agreed to establish an International Programme Office (IPO) to support its work and facilitate the building of the ICSU World Data System.

A subcommittee of WDS-SC participated in the first meeting (21-22 March) of the Polar Information Commons (PIC) initiative led by ICSU’s Committee on Data for Science and Technology (CODATA). WDS ICSU has committed to support the implementation of the Polar Information Commons (PIC), including taking the necessary steps to archive all IPY data.

First Scientific Committee Meeting

The Scientific Committee for the World Data System met for the first time in October, just prior to the SCCID committee. The committee considered the Lessons Learned and Recommendations from the ICSU ad-hoc World Data System Transition Team. The committee identified several priorities including establishing the constitution and bylaws; defining the Mission Statement; and agreeing on the data policy, system architecture and criteria for WDS membership. The committee also discussed the potential role for WDS in addressing the data legacy challenges of the International Polar Year (IPY).
